Week 4
Write a song by mixing old unfinished song ideas together.
This challenge was interesting, at first I was a bit discouraged. I didn't really want to work on old ideas when I'd had the preconception that the whole challenge would be all about brand new ideas. I do, however think it went well and I was still able to modernize the old ideas.
It was cool to sift through years of old notes and sound files, There were some things I had completely forgotten existed. I actually chose one of those to include in the new song. It was a random guitar riff that I recorded one day when I was still in high school. It seemed edgy and I wanted to keep an upbeat aggressive feel to what I would make. The lyrical idea/theme that I chose to meld it with had previously been intended to be a ballad.
Instead of telling a story of heartbreak from meaningless apologies, I reworked the concept of 'sorry' into a stand off point of view, saying I don't want to hear it - talk to the hand... Since last week I had fun building the lyrics around a single metaphor, I decided to do that again this week. I played around with a bunch of phrases until I latched on to the idea of smoke and fire. Then I tried to connect the dots between lies = fire.
I performed yesterday night, and had a bunch of practises through the week, so I am very thankful that the deadline was extended to tonight (even though it was because the challenge was sent out late). I ended up doing almost all of the production just today. These challenges have been great for pushing me to get songs finished quickly, and also to learn to let go of the endless perfectionist in me during the production process.
I still consider this song incomplete. I think with a few more tweaks/additions, it can become much greater!
It's called >>>>> Don't Say You're Sorry <<<<<
Lyrics:
You keep playing with deceptive fire
You think you have something to gain
But your stories fade with the smoke you hide behind
Fabrications even you can not retain
Even when you're caught up in the blame
I can not believe anything you say
So Don't tell me you're sorry
Honestly, I can't take you seriously
Don't think I don't see through your illusions
Just change, don't say you're sorry
Don't say you're sorry
You try to bury ashes from our past
You think you can conceal them with a smile
But the coals still smoulder, you put them out too soon
And still you seem surprised they reignite
Even when you're caught up in the blame
I can not believe anything you say
So Don't tell me you're sorry
Honestly, I can't take you seriously
Don't think I don't see through your illusions
Just change, don't say you're sorry
Don't say you're sorry
Someday you might prove yourself to someone else
Once you realize the truth will always prevail
Don't tell me you're sorry
Honestly, I can't take you seriously
Don't think I don't see through your illusions
Just change, don't say you're sorry
Don't say you're sorry
Don't tell me
Just change
Don't tell me
Don't
