Week 2
Write a song that tells a story.
This week was a bit crazy. For one thing, I don't consider myself good at 'story songs', they always feel like a struggle. So this week was much more of a challenge than last. To add to that, however, I had agreed to kittysit for a friend, and didn't have much time to work on this at home. Meanwhile, my brother (who lives a three day drive away) randomly decided to come visit. And to top it off, I had to finish early because my family is going camping this weekend. I do think it was a good push to pump a song out quickly though.
It took me a while to figure out some kind of storyline. That always seems to be the hardest part. What is it going to be about? Eventually I decided on a heartbreak/love theme, because no one's ever done that before... heh. Getting the lyrics to fit and rhyme in the way I wanted while still progressing the story was probably the hardest part. Especially when I changed the choruses but kept similar rhyming. I ended up with a headache by the end of lyric day.
Fitting the chords to the lyrics in a meaningful way was a bit more comfortable for me, and it was fun to play around with the way different chords feel under the melody. While doing this, though, I realized just how wordy the song is. I could hardly fit them in time. It took some phrasing shuffling and awkward experiments to get things to fit. I still think the lyrics and phrasing could use some improvements, but I am pretty content with the chord progressions. I recorded this in a hurry before heading to the campground, so I couldn't do anything too fancy with it (wellllll, it's still much fancier than a one take acoustic/vocal). Again, I think it turned out pretty okay for how quickly it was all thrown together.
I am really grateful for the SAC Challenge after things like this are pulled out of me. This is definitely not an approach I would have taken on my own, but it helps me gain confidence in an area I feel like I am lacking, which is awesome.
OK, enough blab. Here it is! >>>> Letting Go <<<<<
Lyrics:
She sits and waits for him, worrying and wondering where he is
It's been hours since their night to make things right was to begin
She's not surprised but she still cries from all the lies that he spins
He stumbles home, he's not alone and that's the last thing she needed
He wont even look into her eyes
She shakes her head, she knows that it's time
She says
Just let it go, I'll pack up and move home
Yeah you should know, what we had has been forever broken
I will show you I deserve better than this
By letting go
It took some time for her to unwind 'cuz that night became a blur
It's been months since her whole life turned upside down and filled with hurt
She fell behind and lost her mind but she still tries to move forward
She feels alone but time goes on and there is nothing to relieve her
At least she has her mama by her side
To hold her tight and give her best advice
She says
Just let it go, take your time to grow
Yeah you should know, life gets tough but you can conquer it
Time will show you, you can free yourself from this mess
By letting go
So she keeps on taking chances
Rearranging her circumstances
She meets a man who just adores her
Wants nothing more than to support her
So when she frets about that fragile night
He provides her with comfort and reminds her
Just let it go, that pain was long ago
Yeah you should know, you are not alone and we'll get through this
I will show you, together we will find happiness
And bliss
By letting go
By letting go
